Pierce County Public Transit: Severe Flood Analysis

The Process

-
Pierce county base map, public transit routes, and flood hazard data were imported to the feature dataset.
-
Public transit routes were clipped to the Pierce County base map layer.
-
Public transit route segments were dissolved to create just one feature class per route and calculate the entire length of each route in miles.
-
The 60 dissolved routes were intersected with the flood hazard areas to create a feature class of route segments that would be compromised by flooding.
-
Hazard segments of each bus route were dissolved to determine the total length of each route in miles that would be compromised by flooding.
-
The total length of the compromised segments was divided by the total length of each route to determine the percentage of each route that would be compromised by flooding.
-
-
Routes affected by flooding were symbolized using a green to red gradient, with green routes being less affected and red routes being more affected by flooding.
-
Drop shadows were created for the Pierce County base map and waterways to enhance map readability. Affected bus route numbers were included for reference.
